A IL-8 é uma citocina com funções quimiotáticas e sua função primária é ativar e atrair neutrófilos para os locais de inflamação. Autores encontraram níveis aumentados de IL-8 no plasma e no lavado bronco-alveolar de pacientes com síndrome da angústia respiratória do adulto (SARA) associada à pneumonia grave, confirmando a associação de altos níveis dessa citocina com acúmulo de neutrófilos nos alvéolos. Outros encontraram concentrações elevadas de IL-8 em pacientes sépticos e as correlacionou com mortalidade.
